Why the Verizon iPhone is already too late
So what's the point? Just because Toyota sells tens of millions of Camrys, should Porsche and Ferrari hang it up and go out of business? Apple has been and always will be a PREMIUM brand. Every app that is in the app store is evaluated and approved...assuring high quality. 95% of the apps in the android store are pure garbage...because they have no quality assurance of any kind.
You also fail to mention that the iPhone as a piece of hardware...is by FAR the biggest single selling model of smart phone there is. You also fail to mention that ios is also on the ipod touch as well as the ipad. When you add all of those devices together...especially the phenomenal growth of the iPad just over the past 3 months...then you realize android isn't ahead after all.
When you have a dozen hardware manufacturers all making phones...and eventually tablets...for the same operating system...the operating system must cater to the lowest common denominator of these hardware vendors to ensure compatibility. Here is where Apple has the distinct advantage.
By controlling hardware and software Apple is free to advance technology faster...and more aggresively than android will. Once again...I'd rather drive a BMW than a Honda...and I'm willing to pay more for that experience too.
Stop thinking in terms of 'all or nothing', 'black or white', 'apple OR android'. It's not about that. If that were the case there would be one brand of everything...whether cereal, cars, computers, jeans or phones. All Apple needs to do is have the devoted fan base that keeps growing and admires the pursuit for perfection and innovation that Steve Jobs pursues. Let the masses flock to the mediocre android/Toyota. I'll stick with my iPhone/Porsche.
