Neutral On Monster

December 22, 2010 | Comments: 0
Recommended this article (2)
We recently reiterated our Neutral recommendation on Monster Worldwide Inc., (MWW - Analyst Report).
Monster earlier reported better-than-expected results for the third quarter and provided a strong outlook for the fourth quarter and year 2011. Earnings estimates have gone up in the last sixty days and the company is expected to return to profitability in 2011. Monster expects bookings and revenue, inclusive of HotJobs, to grow in the range of 20% – 25% in 2011.
Monster recently acquired HotJobs from Yahoo (YHOO). HotJobs is a leading online recruitment website. The acquisition should strengthen Monster's position in the online job market and global recruitment resources. Along with an expanding customer base, Monster will now have access to roughly 62% of the US Internet population (130 million). Monster will also expand its newspaper partnerships from 400 to 1000 with the addition of 600 HotJobs daily and weekly newspapers providing local reach in all 50 states.
Monster is well positioned to capitalize on the eventual improvement in economic conditions across the globe. With signs of a recovering economy, we expect companies to increase their recruitment through online vehicles such as Monster.com. Monster is seeing significant increases in renewal rates, repeat customers and new customers.
Asia continues to show more robust improvement in the job market than other parts of the globe. The new search technology by Monster – 6Sense – continues to gain traction and should develop business in the coming months. Monster also continues to focus on its new offering – Power Resume.
Monster is taking steps to diversify its customer base. It has traditionally targeted the enterprise market, or those businesses that are among the 1,500 largest organizations/ operations on a global basis. However, the company is now concentrating its efforts on expanding into the small-to-medium sized businesses (SMBs) with approximately 10 to 2,000 employees and operating primarily in local and regional markets.
We are encouraged by management’s recent efforts to revamp business by constantly introducing innovative products along with cost-reductions. Monster eliminated over $200 million of operating costs over the last three years.
Management continues to see signs of encouragement for its business, but volumes have to be strong enough to drive solid revenue growth similar to the pre-recession levels in early 2008. The impact of these positive developments would be felt in 2011 when we expect Monster to return to profitability.
We would like to wait a while before turning positive on the stock and, therefore, maintain a Neutral recommendation.
